Patek Philippe Nautilus

The Patek Philippe Nautilus started life in the late 70’s as a sports watch, and has since grown into an iconic timepiece that is much sought after. Why? Well, for a start it’s a Patek, so you get 177+ years of expertise and masterful craftsmanship. The Nautilus also cleverly is able to be both elegant and sporty at the same time – though we think it has more formal, dress DNA than pure sport in its blood.

In terms of references, one of the most in-demand models is the:

• Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5711 in stainless steel. It features a 40mm case with graduated dial and folding buckle. It doesn’t help that it was discontinued in 2021, with the steel version prices now climbing north. It is also available in gold, and the demand and prices are similar – though we think the steel date version is the one to get, if you can afford it!

Next in the model line up is the Patek Philippe Aquanaut, introduced in 1997 this is a more affordable, sportier and ‘fun’ version of the Nautilus. Visibly they are definitely from the same gene pool, though the Aquanaut has large bold numerals, a subtle octagonal 40mm case and a distinctive patterned, embossed dial. In terms of case materials, Aquanaut comes in stainless steel, rose gold and white gold. A number of coloured dials are produced, including black, blue/black gradated, brown, khaki green and matte white – often matched to the strap. There is also an all stainless steel strap.

The most common, popular and affordable model is the:

• Patek Philippe Aquanaut ref. 5167 in stainless steel with the fold-over clasp, tropical strap. Water-resistant to 120m, the Aquanaut has the in-house Caliber 324 S C self-winding mechanical movement, with a sweep second feature.
